Computers and the Church

Computers are a great tool.  The biggest problem with them is that to many churches rely on someone elses.

If a church is going to use computerized bookkeeping, or use one for record keeping.  It is STRONGLY URGED that the church first commit to owning it own computer and keeping it upgraded.  Church records are not the private records of an individual; they belong to the church "family", or corporation.  Hence they should be treated with care and with integrity.

Many churches allow someone to keep all the financial records at an individual's home.  This is NOT a good idea.  One simple reason comes to mind, although there are others.  What happens if something happens to that individual; or the individual gets "upset" with the church.   If death is the situation, the records "could" be tied up during probate for some time, as the home could be sealed.  The church is "out of business".

If there are personality problems, getting records "handed over" can be problematic.  This ministry has seen this problem MANY TIMES.  It is not a pleasant situation.  And all can be avoided by keeping all church records at the church, where they belong.

The computer is a church tool.  Don't lone it out, use it for personal use, or leave it unlocked.

(the above is a recommendation that has served many churches and organizations over the years.  The final choice is yours)
